Nearly three decades ago, William F. Buckley Jr. chose Sam Tanenhaus—an author outside the conservative movement—to write his biography, which has caused a stir on the right since its release in June. “They're having a debate among themselves about where Bill Buckley fits in in this fraught moment of our own,” says Tanenhaus. “There are many facets to Bill Buckley.
